For the first time two Sulawesi black-naped orioles (Oriolus chinensis celebensis) have hatched in Avifauna's tropical hall. Dierentuin on Instagram: "Voor de eerste keer kropen er in Avifauna twee Chinese wielewalen uit het ei! De verzorgers zagen steeds een van de vogels op en neer vliegen met voedsel, maar een nest konden ze in de dichtbegroeide Tropenhal niet vinden. Totdat ze gisteren niet alleen de ouders maar ook 2 jongen zagen vliegen! Omdat er maar 6 Europese dierentuinen zijn met deze soort, worden er niet veel wielewalen geboren. One of the pairs of Common Rueppell's griffon vultures (Gyps rueppelli rueppelli) laid an egg last week, like the previous eggs, this egg will eventually be send to Diergaarde Blijdorp to be incubated there. Last year, Avifauna exchanged their breeding pair of Steller's sea eagles (Haliaeetus pelagicus) with a new pair. The old pair, after raising more than 20 young, are enjoying their well-earned retirement elsewhere. The new pair came from a seizure and they have a nest for the first time now. Looking at the livestream it seems like currently one of the parents is always with the chick. With the parent around I don't see the ravens trying anything.

Sadly neither of the Steller's sea eagle chicks made it. One died within days and the other was killed by the parents, possibly due to inexperience.
